Introduction

Dr Kostas (Konstantinos G.) Gkonis brings a long-term vision for the industry and an organisation’s role within it, combining strategic perspective with hands-on operational leadership. As a leader and manager, Kostas enjoys challenging the status quo, driving innovation, and implementing organisational improvements that strengthen governance, enhance performance, and deliver impact internally and externally.

Kostas is passionate about sustainability, ESG and innovation, with over 20 years of international experience in shipping, and the energy industry earlier on. His work has spanned policy and regulatory engagement, environmental soundness and decarbonisation, as well as market fundamentals and intelligence. He brings a multidisciplinary background in engineering, operations research, international business, and corporate responsibility, enabling him to bridge technical complexity with business decision-making and stakeholder engagement.

He holds the position of Director / Secretary General of INTERCARGO since Oct. 2016. During his time, the Association’s membership has more than doubled to currently bringing together more than 400 forward thinking companies from over 35 countries in uniting and promoting quality dry bulk shipping.

He is Fellow (FICRS) of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (2025).
